Do you want to make your own WiFi Router UPS that runs even when there is no electricity? In this post, I will show you how to build a Transformer-Based WiFi Router UPS. The best part is – you don’t need any extra adapter.

With this DIY UPS, your WiFi Router or ONU will keep working during power cuts, giving you uninterrupted internet. Let’s go step by step.

🔋 Why a WiFi Router UPS is Important?

  • Prevents sudden internet disconnection during load-shedding.

  • Protects router/ONU from voltage drops.

  • Very cheap and easy to build at home.

  • Works with most routers (5V / 9V / 12V).

⚡ Working Principle

The system works with Automatic Changeover:

  • When AC mains is available → Router runs from the transformer power + battery charges.

  • When mains goes off → Battery power automatically takes over.

  • Output voltage is regulated by LM2596 & XL6009 modules for stable DC output.

This ensures zero delay switching, so your internet never disconnects.

🛠 Components List (Serially)

To build this UPS, you’ll need:

  1. Transformer (Step Down, 220V AC to 12V AC)

  2. 4x Diodes (6A10) – for bridge rectifier

  3. Electrolytic Capacitors:

    • 1000µF / 25V

    • 220µF (multiple)

    • 470µH inductor filter

  4. Schottky Diodes (1N5822) – fast switching

  5. MOSFET IRF9540 – auto changeover

  6. Voltage Regulators:

    • LM2596T-ADJ (Buck Converter)

    • XL6009 (Boost Converter)

  7. Resistors – 10kΩ, 330Ω, 220Ω, 1kΩ

  8. Switches (SW1, SW2, SW3)

  9. LED Indicator – power status

  10. Battery Connector – 12V Lead Acid / Li-ion Pack / LiFePO4

  11. Output Connector – for WiFi Router

🔹 1. Transformer & Rectifier Section

  • Transformer converts 220V AC → 12V AC.

  • 4x 6A10 Diodes create a bridge rectifier.

  • 1000µF capacitor smooths the DC voltage.

  • LED + Resistor (R1 = 1kΩ) indicates power ON.

🔹 2. Battery & Auto Changeover Section

  • Battery is connected via Connector BATTERY.

  • IRF9540 MOSFET + Diodes (1N5822) handle automatic switching.

  • When mains ON → Router runs from transformer + battery charges.

  • When mains OFF → MOSFET switches and battery powers router.

  • No manual switch needed, it’s automatic.

🔹 3. Voltage Regulation Section

  • LM2596T Buck Converter (U10) regulates stable 5V / 9V output for router.

  • XL6009 Boost Converter (U14) ensures correct voltage if battery discharges.

  • Capacitors (C2, C3, C4, C5) filter the output to prevent ripple.

  • Inductors (470µH) improve efficiency.

🔹 4. Output & Switching

  • SW1, SW2, SW3 used as optional ON/OFF and mode selection.

  • Final output is connected to Router Power Port.

  • You can adjust LM2596 / XL6009 to get exact voltage (5V, 9V, or 12V) as required by your WiFi Router.

🔌 Connection Guide (Step by Step)

  1. AC Input → Connect transformer primary to 220V AC mains.

  2. DC Output from Rectifier → Goes to MOSFET + Battery Charger.

  3. Battery → Connect to BATTERY terminal (12V).

  4. LM2596 & XL6009 → Adjust to your router’s voltage.

  5. Router Output → Connect router DC jack to UPS output.

  6. LED → Indicates UPS working mode.

🖥 Testing & Output

  • Step 1: Power ON the circuit → Router should run, battery charging.

  • Step 2: Switch OFF AC mains → Router continues running on battery instantly.

  • Step 3: Measure output voltage → Ensure it matches router requirement.

✅ Advantages of This Design

  • Works without adapter (direct from transformer).

  • Automatic changeover (no manual switching).

  • Provides stable DC output (no fluctuations).

  • Low cost DIY project with easily available parts.
